Where Did Each Straw Hat Train During the Time Skip?

Where every Straw Hat spent the two-year time skip: training islands, teachers and new skills, plus why Robin and Brook's routes need a different answer.

Luffy trained with Rayleigh on Rusukaina, Zoro studied under Mihawk on Kuraigana, and Sanji stayed in the Kamabakka Kingdom. The other Straw Hats developed their own specialties: weather science, plants, medicine, technology, Devil Fruit techniques and music.

There were nine Straw Hats when Kuma scattered the crew. Their time apart wasn’t nine identical training camps. Some found teachers; others found research, allies or a stage. Robin and Brook also moved beyond the places where they first landed, which is why a list of Kuma’s destinations only answers half the question.

Spoilers for the crew’s separation, return and abilities through Fish-Man Island. This guide focuses on the original two-year time skip, without current manga developments.

Straw Hat time-skip training at a glance

The table follows the crew’s join order. “Teacher or resource” matters: studying someone’s research is different from meeting them for lessons.

Robin’s and Brook’s entries describe routes, rather than claiming either spent every day of those two years in one location. The crew’s separation-location reference is useful for checking those movements.

Why did three days become two years?

The crew originally intended to regroup at Sabaody after three days. Their defeat showed how unprepared they were for the opponents ahead. Rayleigh proposed giving themselves time to grow, and Luffy sent the others a message through the newspaper photograph of his return to Marineford.

3D2Y means “not three days: two years.” The crossed-out 3D cancels the original meeting interval; 2Y replaces it. The crew members understand the message and choose to prepare for their next voyage rather than rush back immediately.

The decisions unfold across chapters 595–597. Chapter 597, “3D2Y”, brings together Zoro’s request to Mihawk and Luffy’s introduction to Rayleigh’s Haki training. In the anime, episode 515 covers Zoro’s pledge, followed by Luffy’s training in episode 516.

Where each crew member trained

Their choices make more sense when you connect the location to the job they do aboard the Sunny.

Monkey D. Luffy, the Straw Hat captain

Monkey D. Luffy

Rusukaina · Rayleigh

Focus: Haki fundamentals and surviving stronger opponents

Kuma sends Luffy to Amazon Lily, but his training takes place on nearby Rusukaina, an uninhabited island with dangerous wildlife. Rayleigh explains the three Haki types and gives him a foundation to build on. The distinction is useful: Amazon Lily belongs to the route that gets Luffy there; Rusukaina is the training answer. Episode 516 establishes the arrangement. Learning the basics does not mean Luffy returns with every advanced Haki application already mastered.

Roronoa Zoro, the Straw Hat swordsman

Roronoa Zoro

Kuraigana Island · Mihawk

Focus: Swordsmanship under the man he wants to surpass

Zoro lands on Kuraigana, where Perona and Mihawk are staying. After understanding Luffy's message, he asks Mihawk to teach him. The point of the scene is the cost of asking: Zoro puts his pride aside because returning stronger matters more than looking independent. It doesn't end his ambition to defeat Mihawk. The official English synopsis for episode 515 identifies that request as the episode's central pledge.

Nami, the Straw Hat navigator

Nami

Weatheria · Weather scientists

Focus: Understanding the New World's weather

Nami stays on Weatheria, the small sky island devoted to studying weather. Haredas and the other scientists offer knowledge she can use both to navigate and to improve her weather-based fighting. Her choice fits the navigator's job: reaching the next island safely can matter as much as winning a duel. Chapter 596 records her decision to stay and learn. This is weather science, not confirmation that she learns Haki during the skip.

Usopp, the Straw Hat sniper

Usopp

Boin Archipelago · Heracles

Focus: Pop Greens, fitness and survival

Usopp's apparently generous food supply turns out to be part of a dangerous environment. With Heracles, he learns how to use the archipelago's plants instead of simply becoming their next meal. Pop Greens give his marksmanship a new set of tools: a seed can produce a barrier, trap or attack rather than act like an ordinary projectile. His training decision is also covered in chapter 596. The plants expand his options as a sniper without changing what makes that role valuable: choosing the right shot for the problem.

Sanji, the Straw Hat cook

Sanji

Momoiro Island · Kamabakka Kingdom

Focus: Attack Cuisine and a physical challenge

Sanji remains in Kamabakka Kingdom on Momoiro Island. In chapter 595, Ivankov gives him a challenge involving the masters of 99 Attack Cuisine recipes. Sanji has to earn the cooking knowledge while dealing with the island's fighters. That gives the interval two purposes: improve what he can serve the crew and improve how he can protect it. His two years shouldn't be reduced to either cooking lessons or one uninterrupted sparring match with Ivankov.

Tony Tony Chopper, the Straw Hat doctor

Tony Tony Chopper

Torino Kingdom · Medical study

Focus: Medicine and his own body's possibilities

Chopper returns to Torino Kingdom after realizing that the people there have medical knowledge worth studying. Their library and local resources offer a route to becoming a better doctor; his own transformations give him a separate area to develop. His resolve in chapter 595 is to become whatever the crew needs, even a monster. The important result is a broader contribution: treating his friends and having more options when he must fight beside them.

Nico Robin, the Straw Hat archaeologist

Nico Robin

Tequila Wolf → Revolutionary Army

Focus: Growing stronger among revolutionary allies

Robin's first destination is Tequila Wolf, where she is forced to work on the bridge. After the revolutionaries liberate the workers, she chooses to meet Dragon and spends the two years with the Revolutionary Army, associated with its base at Baltigo. Episode 515's synopsis confirms the decision to meet him. Her route takes her from captivity into an organization that welcomes her. The story establishes those allies and her growth, without laying out a day-by-day training schedule.

Franky, the Straw Hat shipwright

Franky

Karakuri Island · Vegapunk's research

Focus: Engineering and cyborg upgrades

Franky reaches Baldimore on Karakuri Island, Vegapunk's birthplace. The old laboratory and its research give him material to study and apply to his own body. This is an apprenticeship to someone's work, not evidence that Vegapunk stands beside him as a tutor for two years. Franky's progress suits the shipwright: observe a machine, understand the idea and build something useful from it. Chapter 596 is part of the setup for his decision to stay.

Brook, the Straw Hat musician

Brook

Namakura → Kenzan Island → Soul King career

Focus: Music, performance and his soul powers

Brook lands on Namakura Island, but later becomes a captive of the Longarm Tribe on Kenzan Island. His story develops into a successful performing career as Soul King, rather than a conventional island-and-master training arrangement. He also returns with a better understanding of what his soul can do. Treating Namakura as his only two-year location misses most of that route. The separation-location reference distinguishes the stops and the tour that follows.

Did every Straw Hat learn Haki during the time skip?

No. Training apart does not mean learning the same ability. Luffy receives explicit instruction from Rayleigh. Other members improve skills that suit their roles, and their later Haki confirmations have to be checked individually.

Usopp learns to use Pop Greens, Nami studies weather science, Franky works on machinery and Brook explores his soul powers. Those improvements have explanations of their own; they aren’t evidence that everyone completed Haki training.

For the complete current ability table, use the Straw Hat Haki guide. That page has Wano spoilers and a separate manga section through chapter 1195.

Where was Jinbe during the time skip?

Jinbe wasn’t one of the nine crew members Kuma scattered at Sabaody. He helps Luffy during the war and its aftermath, but his circumstances are separate from the nine training routes above. Adding him as a tenth row would make the present-day roster look like the roster that existed then.

His later joining milestones belong in the crew join-order guide. This table answers where the separated Straw Hats went, not where every future member happened to be.

When do they return to Sabaody?

The post-skip story begins in chapter 598 / episode 517, but the full group doesn’t assemble in one instant. For the distinction between the first returns and the Sunny departing with everyone, use the leaving and rejoining guide.

That return is the payoff to their individual decisions. The captain needs stronger fighters, but he also needs a navigator who understands stranger seas, a doctor with more answers and a shipwright who can turn research into a working solution.
