How Old Is Each Straw Hat? Ages Before and After the Time Skip
All ten Straw Hat ages before and after One Piece's two-year time skip, with birthdays, youngest-to-oldest order and Brook's unusual age explained.
Luffy is 19 after the time skip, Zoro and Sanji are 21, and Nami is 20. Chopper is the youngest Straw Hat at 17; Brook is the oldest at 90. The crew’s ages span more than seven decades, even though their captain is still a teenager.
The numbers below are the characters’ listed ages in the manga/anime continuity. Before the time skip means the original voyage; after the time skip means the era following the crew’s two-year separation. Neither column counts the years since you started watching.
Crew-roster spoilers, including Jinbe’s membership, plus Brook’s Thriller Bark backstory. No current manga battles or power-ups are covered.
Straw Hat ages and birthdays at a glance
The table follows the Straw Hats’ join order, rather than sorting by age. Select a name for the short explanation below.
| Straw Hat | Before time skip | After time skip | Birthday |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monkey D. Luffy | 17 | 19 | May 5 |
| Roronoa Zoro | 19 | 21 | November 11 |
| Nami | 18 | 20 | July 3 |
| Usopp | 17 | 19 | April 1 |
| Sanji | 19 | 21 | March 2 |
| Tony Tony Chopper | 15 | 17 | December 24 |
| Nico Robin | 28 | 30 | February 6 |
| Franky | 34 | 36 | March 9 |
| Brook | 88 | 90 | April 3 |
| Jinbe | 44 | 46 | April 2 |
Jinbe’s 44 is his age in the earlier era, not an age at which he joined the crew. He was not one of the nine Straw Hats who separated for training.
Current ages and birthdays come from the official character profiles. The official Vivre Card list also labels the nine earlier crew members’ pre-skip editions by age; Jinbe’s earlier figure is his listed 46 minus the two-year interval. The source notes explain those references.
Why are there two ages for each Straw Hat?
The crew spends two years apart preparing to continue its voyage. That is why Luffy’s familiar 17 becomes 19, Nami’s 18 becomes 20, and every other row increases by two.
The separation is part of the story, not a reboot or an alternate timeline. The official English page for episode 516, “Luffy’s Training Begins! To the Place We Promised in 2 Years!” describes Rayleigh taking Luffy away for that training period. Episode 517 begins the reunion era.
For what each member actually did during those years, use the time-skip training guide. This page answers the age question without turning the table into a list of combat upgrades.
Each Straw Hat’s age explained
Monkey D. Luffy
Captain · 17 → 19
Luffy begins his voyage at 17 and is listed as 19 after the two-year separation. Being captain doesn't make him the oldest: Robin, Franky, Brook and Jinbe all bring years of experience he doesn't have. His leadership depends on the trust he earns from them, rather than seniority.
Roronoa Zoro
Swordsman · 19 → 21
Zoro is 19 when he becomes Luffy's first crewmate and 21 in his post-skip profile. He and Sanji share the same listed age, while Luffy is two years younger. First to join and oldest aboard are different distinctions; Zoro holds the former.
Nami
Navigator · 18 → 20
Nami is 18 during the original voyage and 20 after the skip. Her age puts her between Luffy and Usopp at 19 and Zoro and Sanji at 21. Her authority over the ship's course comes from navigation skills, even when she is ordering around much older crewmates.
Usopp
Sniper · 17 → 19
Usopp is the same listed age as Luffy: 17 before the skip and 19 afterward. His more muscular return doesn't represent a longer absence than anyone else's. He spends the same two-year interval developing his own strengths, while remaining one of the crew's younger members.
Sanji
Cook · 19 → 21
Sanji is 19 at the Baratie and 21 after the skip. His professional experience can make him seem older than that, but his official age matches Zoro's. Their different birthdays don't change the simple answer most readers need: both have a listed post-skip age of 21.
Tony Tony Chopper
Doctor · 15 → 17
Chopper is 15 before the skip and 17 afterward, making him the youngest Straw Hat in both eras. His small form isn't a separate childhood age, and his transformations don't reset the number. Use the age the story assigns him; converting it into supposed “reindeer years” doesn't give a canon human-equivalent age.
Nico Robin
Archaeologist · 28 → 30
Robin is 28 in her pre-skip profile and 30 afterward. She is older than the five East Blue recruits and Chopper, but younger than Franky, Jinbe and Brook. That puts her between the crew's youngest adventurers and its older veterans, rather than making her the oldest member.
Franky
Shipwright · 34 → 36
Franky is 34 during Water Seven and 36 after the skip. Rebuilding his cyborg body changes his appearance and equipment, not his birth date. He is six years older than Robin by the listed ages, with a shipwright's working life behind him before he sails with the crew.
Brook
Musician · 88 → 90
Brook is 88 when he meets the crew and 90 after the skip. His listed age includes his earlier life and the decades associated with his death, revival and lonely voyage. Returning as a skeleton doesn't restart the count at zero. His official profile describes fifty years alone before meeting Luffy, which explains why he belongs to a very different generation.
Jinbe
Helmsman · 44 → 46
Jinbe's post-skip age is 46; two years earlier, he is 44. He is the second-oldest Straw Hat after Brook. Including him in an age comparison doesn't place him in the original training group: his eventual membership is a separate story milestone, covered in the crew guide.
Who is the youngest and who is the oldest?
Youngest to oldest by listed post-skip age: Chopper (17), Luffy and Usopp (19), Nami (20), Zoro and Sanji (21), Robin (30), Franky (36), Jinbe (46), then Brook (90).
That makes the gap between Chopper and Brook 73 years. Brook is also 44 years older than Jinbe, so excluding the musician changes the answer to the oldest-member question considerably.
Luffy/Usopp and Zoro/Sanji are grouped as age ties here. Birthdays are included for reference, without assigning a birth year to every character or inventing the exact current date aboard the Sunny.
Questions that come up often
Is Luffy 19 or 20 now?
His official profile lists 19. That’s the post-skip reference age used here. A real-world May 5 passing doesn’t automatically add another year to the story, and a newer anime episode isn’t evidence of an in-universe birthday.
Why do some guides say Luffy is 17?
Seventeen is his pre-skip age. Both numbers have a place: 17 for the original voyage, 19 for the era after the two-year separation. Check which period a guide is discussing before treating the numbers as a contradiction.
Is Zoro older than Sanji?
They are both listed as 21 after the skip and 19 before it. Zoro’s birthday is November 11 and Sanji’s is March 2. Their shared listed age is the useful comparison; don’t turn the order of their birthday months into an unsupported exact age gap.
Is Brook really 90, even though he died?
Yes. Ninety is the official listed post-skip age. It doesn’t mean ninety uninterrupted years with a living human body. His death and revival are part of that history, rather than a new starting point for the profile.
How old is Chopper in human years?
The canon reference age is 17 after the skip, or 15 before it. The profiles don’t require a conversion chart. His reindeer biology and Human-Human Fruit forms don’t establish a second official age.
Are these the live-action actors’ ages?
No. These are the Straw Hat characters’ manga/anime ages. An actor’s age and the adaptation’s portrayal are separate questions; neither changes this table.
Sources and reading references
The primary references are the official ONE PIECE.com character profiles, checked October 20, 2026. Their age and birthday fields are in Japanese; the numbers and dates are rendered in English above. These source pages also contain later-story information beyond this article’s scope.
- Captain and East Blue recruits: Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji.
- Later recruits: Chopper, Robin, Franky, Brook, Jinbe.
- Earlier-era ages: the official Vivre Card product list labels the nine pre-skip crew editions with ages 17, 19, 18, 17, 19, 15, 28, 34 and 88 respectively. This is the publisher’s card listing, not a claim to have read every physical card. Jinbe’s 44 is calculated from 46 and the two-year interval.
- English viewing references: episode 516 and episode 517 on Crunchyroll. The publicly readable title and synopsis establish the training interval and reunion; watching the full episodes may require an account or subscription.
These are profile ages, not estimates built by adding the manga’s publication years. If an official profile or the story establishes a new age, that is the evidence to use for an update.
