One Piece — Gears & Haki
Luffy's combat progression — every Gear unlock with debut opponent and chapter — plus the full Haki reference: three types, three advanced forms, every confirmed Conqueror's user, and Straw Hat affinities.
Luffy’s combat progression by debut fight, plus the full Haki system: three types, three advanced forms, and who has what.
Luffy’s Gears — unlock order
Tied to the specific fight each Gear debuted in. Gear 2 and 3 are Enies Lobby; Gear 4’s three forms unlocked one per Emperor-tier opponent; Gear 5 is the awakening of his Devil Fruit (Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika).
| Gear | Form | Debut opponent | Manga chapter | Anime episode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gear 2 (Second) | Full-body blood acceleration | Blueno (CP9) | Ch. 387 | Ep. 272 |
| Gear 3 (Third) | Bone inflation, giant limbs | Rob Lucci (CP9) | Ch. 403 | Ep. 287 |
| Gear 4: Boundman | Muscle-inflated compression form | Donquixote Doflamingo | Ch. 784 | Ep. 726 |
| Gear 4: Tankman | Shock-absorbing bounce form | Charlotte Cracker | Ch. 835 | Ep. 798 |
| Gear 4: Snakeman | High-speed agile form | Charlotte Katakuri | Ch. 895 | Ep. 869 |
| Gear 5 (Awakening) | Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika | Kaido of the Beasts | Ch. 1044 | Ep. 1071 |
If you’re an anime-only watcher trying to close the gap, Gear 5’s debut (Ep. 1071) is the single most remarkable animation sequence the show has ever produced — Toei went all-in. Worth waiting for even if you’re tempted to jump to the manga for Egghead.
The three Haki types
The vocabulary is post-timeskip — pre-Sabaody, Skypiea called Observation “Mantra,” and Armament had no formal name. Rayleigh codified the system on Rusukaina.
| Type | Translated name | What it does | Visual tell |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kenbunshoku | Observation | Sense presence, intent, emotion; predict near-future motion | None at base; faint outlines for Future Sight |
| Busoshoku | Armament | Invisible armor; lets the user hit Logia bodies directly | Black sheen on the limb / weapon |
| Haoshoku | Conqueror’s | Overpower the wills of the weaker-willed; can clad attacks at advanced level | Black lightning around the user |
Anyone can train Observation and Armament with effort. Conqueror’s is innate — Rayleigh’s line is “one in several million.”
Advanced forms
Each type has an advanced form that only shows up among the strongest fighters in the world. All three were named in Wano, retroactively explaining techniques that had been on-screen for years.
| Type | Advanced form | Effect | First clearly shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Observation | Future Sight (Mirai Shi) | See a few seconds ahead, dodge attacks before they land | Charlotte Katakuri vs Luffy, Whole Cake Island |
| Armament | Internal Destruction (Ryuo / “flowing” Haki) | Send the strike through armor/skin into organs without contact | Hyogoro teaching Luffy in Udon prison, Wano |
| Conqueror’s | Coating (Clad CoC) | Coat attacks in Conqueror’s so they bypass durability and damage Yonko-tier defense | Big Mom and Kaido clashing over Onigashima |
Future Sight predates the term — Enel’s Mantra in Skypiea was the same ability, just labeled differently. Advanced Armament is the same skill Rayleigh used on the kraken pre-timeskip; Wano just gave it a name.
Confirmed Conqueror’s Haki users
Conqueror’s is a small list. The series has been deliberate about adding to it — every reveal is meaningful.
| Character | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Monkey D. Luffy | Active | First accidental burst Sabaody (Ep. 391); Clad CoC in Onigashima |
| Roronoa Zoro | Active | Awakened mid-fight vs Kaido at Onigashima |
| Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom) | Defeated | Clad CoC user |
| Kaido | Defeated | Clad CoC user |
| Shanks | Active | Suppressed an entire Whitebeard fleet on Marineford by aura alone |
| Edward Newgate (Whitebeard) | Deceased | Implicit; never on-screen explicitly but heavily implied |
| Gol D. Roger | Deceased | Confirmed by Rayleigh |
| Silvers Rayleigh | Active | Trained Luffy on Rusukaina |
| Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) | Active | Strongly implied, never explicit on-page |
| Eustass Kid | Active | Awakened during Whole Cake escape arc |
| Trafalgar D. Water Law | Active | Quiet user — only confirmed at Wano |
| Charlotte Katakuri | Defeated | Defeated by Luffy on Whole Cake Island |
| Boa Hancock | Active | Confirmed by Rayleigh, never used on-page |
| Donquixote Doflamingo | Defeated | Confirmed in flashback dialogue |
| Sengoku | Retired | Buddha Zoan + Conqueror’s |
| Monkey D. Garp | Retired | Confirmed in Marineford flashbacks |
| Chinjao | Retired | Former pirate, broke a continent with it |
| Yamato | Active | Inherited from Kaido genetically |
Straw Hat Haki affinities
Not every Straw Hat is a Haki user — Chopper, Franky, and Brook lean on Devil Fruit / cybernetics / soul mechanics instead. Among the human fighters:
| Member | Observation | Armament | Conqueror’s | Notable awakening |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luffy | Yes — Future Sight | Yes — Ryuo | Yes — Clad | CoC clad: Onigashima vs Kaido (Ch. 1010, Ep. 1062) |
| Zoro | Yes | Yes — Enma channels Ryuo | Yes — Clad | CoC awakened: Onigashima vs Kaido (Ch. 1010, Ep. 1062) |
| Sanji | Yes — sharpest CoO on the crew | Yes (post-timeskip) | No | CoO unique: senses women’s emotions specifically |
| Usopp | Yes — only CoO | No | No | CoO awakened: Dressrosa, sniping Sugar (Ch. 758, Ep. 689) |
| Jinbe | Yes | Yes — Fish-Man Karate channels it | No | Pre-crew; standard for a former Warlord |
| Nami, Robin, Chopper, Franky, Brook | — | — | — | None on-page |
What changes at the advanced tier
The jump from base to advanced isn’t a percentage upgrade — it changes what the user can fight. Pre-Wano, base Armament was the gate to hitting Logia users. Advanced Armament + Clad Conqueror’s is the gate to hitting Yonko. The Final Saga has made this explicit: Luffy’s Gear 5 is durable on its own, but every meaningful blow he lands on Yonko-tier opponents is Clad.
